Movie Review: Now You See Me

By admin - 11th July 2013

Now You See Me is a movie about four magicians who rob a bank on stage, as part of their act.  They pick a random member of the audience, bring him on stage, transport him to a bank vault in France (they are in Las Vegas), and bring him back in seconds with all the money from the vault, and give that money to the audience members.  You find out pretty quickly how they did it (there is a logical explanation),...

TV Review: Arrested Development, Season 4

By admin - 18th June 2013

After a long, long hiatus, Arrested Development as returned for another season with mixed results.  If you’re unfamiliar, Arrested Development was on Fox in the early 2000’s and was cancelled due to low ratings.  But it built a strong cult following and has done extremely well on DVD, so Netflix decided to pick the show up and bring all the original cast members back. The main problem is that now that most of the cast has moved on to much...

Movie Review: Man of Steel

By admin - 18th June 2013

I don’t know why everyone hated the last Superman movie so much, but apparently it was trash and another reboot of the Superman franchise was necessary.  For some reason they asked Zack Snyder to direct despite the fact that he’s made five other movies and none of them have been good.  He specialized in glitzy, over-the-top violent movies with no heart or charm.  You know, exactly what we all love about Superman.  Luckily, Man of Steel by far his best...

Movie Review: Star Trek: Into Darkness

By admin - 24th May 2013

J.J. Abrams, set to direct the upcoming Star Wars movie in a couple of years, gives us a taste of what to expect with Star Trek: Into Darkness.  Kirk, Spock, Bones, Scotty, Sulu, and others are all back aboard the Enterprise.  This time around they are trying to stop a mysterious terrorist played by Benedict Cumberbatch.  I’m not a long-time Star Trek fan, but I have to say that these last two movies are a lot of fun.  Abrams has...

Movie Review: Iron Man 3

By admin - 22nd May 2013

Robert Downey, Jr. is back as Tony Stark in the three Iron Man movie.  With last year’s The Avengers, this is the fourth full-length Iron Man movie starring Downey, Jr, and he was really made for this role.  Without him, this would have been another generic action movie with big explosions and special effects.  Downey, Jr. makes the movie fun and sets it apart from the rest of the pack.  With a new director, Iron Man 3 feels a lot...

Movie Review: Oblivion

By admin - 10th May 2013

Oblivion stars Tom Cruise as one of the last men on earth in a desolate, apocalyptic future.  This has been done so many times now, to varying degrees of failure and success (mostly failure), that the entire concept seems tired.  But lucky directly Joseph Kosinski, who’s only other credit is the masterpiece ‘Tron: Legacy,’ has a few tricks up his sleeve to try and keep things interesting.  There are twists along the way that are often unintentionally funny, and the...

Movie Review: Jack the Giant Slayer

By admin - 29th March 2013

Jack the Giant Slayer is, unfortunately, the only movie I saw this month.  I was hoping to see that magician movie with Steve Carrell, which also looks lame, but alas I was out-voted.  It stars the kid from About A Boy as Jack, a boy who sells his horse for some magic beans.  The beans grow a beanstalk up to an island in the sky inhabited by giants who are disgusting.  The movie is peppered with moments of the giants farting,...

Video Game Reviews

Starcraft: Heart of the Swarm: I really love RTS games, so I was excited to pick up the latest Starcraft game last week.  I’m able half way through it, and so far have really had fun with it.  I am not a multi-player guy – I figure I’ll get slaughtered, so I just stick with the campaign.  Blizzard has done a really good job of mixing things up so every mission is different.  No longer can you just build up...

Utah Jazz: Probably won’t make the playoffs, but that’s okay

By admin - 7th March 2013

The Utah Jazz have lost five of their last six games and the Lakers are now only one game behind them, and they have momentum.  I hate to say it, but I think the Jazz are going to miss out on the playoffs this year.  Injuries have hurt them, as has their youth and inexperience.  I’m a Jazz fan, so I’d love to see them in the playoffs, but I don’t think it’s a terrible thing if they miss out...

The Oscars: Why does anyone care?

By admin - 7th March 2013

The Oscars were a couple of weeks ago, hosted by alleged funnyman Seth MacFarlane.  You know what really grinds my gears? (family guy reference) The fact that people care about the Oscars.  My favorite movies of 2012 included The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, and The Hobbit, none of which were nominated for best picture.  Argo won the award, and don’t get me wrong, I liked Argo, but it seems like the movies that win are always the really well-made,...

Movie Review: Premium Rush

By admin - 7th March 2013

The only new movie I saw in the last while is Premium Rush, which is new to Red Box.  It stars Joseph Gordon Levitt (you probably know him from the hit NBC series 3rd Rock From the Sun in the 90s) as a bicycle messenger in New York.  Sounds exciting, right?  Well it is!  You thought you knew everything that goes on with these bicycle messengers, you have no idea! First of all, his girlfriend just broke up with him because...

Still not sure who the Jazz are

By admin - 10th February 2013

The Utah Jazz are over halfway through the season.  With the allstar break coming up and the trade deadline shortly thereafter, a lot of people are expecting the Jazz to make a trade.  The problem is that it’s hard to say who the Jazz are at this point in the season.  They’ve shown glimpses of potential, won some tough games against a few good teams, but they’ve also lost, at home, to some bad teams, and tend to give away...

30 Rock ends on a high note

By admin - 10th February 2013

One of my favorite shows of all time, 30 Rock, ended last week with one of the best finales I’ve ever watched.  It was sad to see such a great show end, and too bad that it never found a bigger audience because it was truly a great series. It’s a weird era for television because the best shows in TV aren’t necessarily the most watched shows on TV.  Seinfeld, Cheers, The Simpsons, Bob Newhart, etc… all had high viewership...
