Movie Review: Jurassic World
Jurassic Park was released in 1993 and is one of the first truly great theater experiences I remember. The special effects ushered in a new era that, for better or worse, have changed movies forever. Over 20 years later it still holds up and is one of Steven Spielberg’s greatest achievements.
Jurassic World, while nowhere near the level of the original, is probably my favorite of the Jurassic sequels, and the filmmakers have a lot of fun with a fully populated amusement park go haywire when, once again, the dinosaurs escape and attack the patrons. The movie has some really cool moments, my favorite involving flying tyrannosaurs attacking the guests reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds. But overall these moments aren’t cohesive and don’t add up for me. Too much reliance on computer generated animation not just on the dinosaurs but also on the surroundings was one of my biggest issues.
Overall I thought it was a fun experience and I think Spielberg would approve. With a huge box office there is already another sequel in development, and I just don’t know how many times these dinosaurs can keep getting loose. Where can they go from here? I don’t know, but I’m sure those Hollywood geniuses will cook up something good.
