AMC’s Mad Men Returns

After a long hiatus, Mad Men, a show that won the Emmy for Best Drama four straight years, has finally returned. If you’re not familiar with the show, it follows the lives of the employees of an advertising agency in the 1960s. At times great, it can also be slow and boring at times. It’s interesting, but I’m not sure it’s worth all the hype. The dialogue and acting are top-notch, but sometimes you’ll watch an entire episode and wonder if anything actually happened. There are a lot of long scenes of dialogue and plot lines that don’t add up to anything, and it seems like there’s a lot of build-up and not a lot of payoff.

But, when Mad Men’s good, it’s really good. So good, in fact, that you’ll sit through the boring stuff until something cool finally happens. Jon Hamm, who plays lead Don Draper, is perfect as the man you admire and hate at the same time. You never know what he’s going to do next, and it keeps the show interesting.

After two episodes, I have to admit it’s been more slow than interesting. But something about Mad Men keeps me coming back. If you haven’t been watching, I suggest starting at season one and catch up, rather than just jumping in. If you’re a patient viewer, I think you’ll enjoy it.
