Movie Review: Edge of Tomorrow

Tom Cruise has had an impressive streak lately of action flicks ranging from mediocre to decent, and that streak continues with Edge of Tomorrow.  The concept is that Cruise’s character (known only as “Cage”?) is infected with some sort of alien goo that causes him to live the same day over and over and over.  So it’s basically “Groundhog Day” meets “Halo”, but not nearly as good.

Tom Cruise is a good actor, but it’s been hard to take him seriously as an action star for the last few years.  Back in his glory days of “Mission: Impossible”, “Top Gun”, “The Firm”, etc… he could pull it off, but after seeing him jump on Oprah’s couch, it’s just not the same.  When he jumped on that couch, he jumped the shark for me.  “Minority Report” was his last truly great action movie for me.

That’s not to say that he hasn’t had any decent showings in recent years.  “Jack Reacher was “fun”, “Oblivion” was decent, and “Edge of Tomorrow” is his best film in a few years.  He and Emily Blunt manage some good chemistry and there are some great moments.  Overall, not the greatest movie of the year, but could be one of the best of the summer?
